Description

5 and 7 High Street in Dalkeith is an earlier 19th-century, two-storey and attic, four-bay former house that sits on a slope, with a shop on the ground floor. The building is constructed of droved ashlar, with the eastern elevation painted at the ground level and the western elevation made of rubble. It features base, band, and eaves courses, with raised angle margins on the left and a shared angle margin on the right with Nos 9-13 High Street.

On the eastern elevation facing High Street, there is a flush panelled door with a four-pane letterbox fanlight located in the outer right bay. To the left, there is a plain late 19th-century shop front consisting of three bays, complete with iron canopy fixtures. The first floor has regular fenestration, with a blind window in the bay to the left of the centre.

The western elevation has fenestration in the outer bays. The northern elevation is adjoined to Nos 9-13 High Street, while the southern elevation is joined to Nos 1 and 3 High Street, with some gable exposed due to different roof pitches on the western side.

The building predominantly features a 12-pane glazing pattern in sash and case windows, with a later wooden mullioned two-light replacement window in the outer right bay on the first floor of the eastern elevation. There is also a canted and piended slate-hung dormer window off-centre to the left on the eastern side, along with a rooflight to the right. The building has a coped skew to the south and is covered with grey slates, although the stacks have been removed.
