Description
Glyn Celyn is a large, two-story house built in the 18th century. The facade is constructed of pink-brown ashlar sandstone, with a bandcourse marking the floor level and a plinth at its base. The roof is slate, with a shallow pitch and deep, bracketed eaves, complemented by substantial stone chimneys. The main front faces roughly southeast, featuring a central recessed bay flanked by two bays, each topped with a pedimented gable. The first floor has 12-pane sash windows, while the ground floor windows are larger, also with 12 panes. A central, enclosed porch has Doric pilasters and double doors with a lozenged overlight, with windows on either side. To the left, a lower two-story block has two 12-pane sash windows to the first floor and two larger 12-pane sashes on the ground floor. The northeast front, overlooking the garden, has three windows. To the left is a splayed bay with a 16-pane sash window on the first floor and a tripartite window on the ground floor, composed of a large 12-pane sash flanked by narrow 1-pane sashes. The central section has a 12-pane sash window on each floor, and to the right is a shallow square bay with a 16-pane sash window above and a tripartite window below, with a large 12-pane sash flanked by narrow 4-pane sashes. The gable end to the northwest is blank, with a pedimented gable.
At the rear, a lower two-story block comprises five windows. A gabled block projects at a right angle, and the return to the southwest features a projecting chimney flanked by 12-pane sash windows. The rear of the house is faced with rubble stone and has small-pane sash glazing, with arched sash lights illuminating the staircase. A conservatory connects the two wings.
The porch leads into a lobby featuring an archway flanked by Doric columns. The main hall has a simple cornice, and original panelled doors and doorcases are found throughout the ground floor rooms. To the rear of the hall, a wooden staircase has an open string, stick balusters, a wooden rail, and a half landing lit by an arched sash window. To the left of the hall is a study with a marble fireplace, and the rear hall has a cornice with Gothic arcading and a marble fireplace with a Tucor arch. To the right of the hall, a drawing/sitting room has original ceiling roses, a cornice with an acanthus frieze, a marble fireplace, and coved walls in the window bay. A broad doorway, with a doorcase and panelled jambs, leads to a smaller sitting room, also with a marble fireplace. The dining room, now a library, has original ceiling roses, a cornice with a floral frieze, a grey marble fireplace, and panelled shutters to the windows. Upstairs rooms retain most of their original panelled doors, simple cornices, and fireplaces. Simpler service rooms and stairs are located in the rear wings. The house demonstrates group value, reflecting its significance within its designed landscape.
