Description

Hughes Outfitters is a three-storey building, likely dating to the 18th century. It has a slate roof with overhanging eaves at the front and a red brick chimney on the left side. The front of the building is smoothly rendered, with pilaster strips at the ends and a decorative band between the first and second floors. The east-facing gable end is constructed of rubble masonry with squared hammer-dressed quoins.

The building has a three-window front, with second-floor windows being 12-pane hornless sashes, 4 panes over 8, and first-floor windows being 16-pane hornless sashes. The windows have painted wooden surrounds and are set very shallow. A projecting shopfront, the full width of the building, occupies the ground floor. While partially obscured by an unsympathetic fascia board, the shopfront retains details characteristic of a late 19th-century front depicted in old photographs.
