Description
The building is a former confectioner's shop, now a fruiterer's, dating from the 19th century. It has two storeys and features a roof with overhanging eaves and exposed rafters. The first floor is constructed of yellow and red pressed brick, with three asymmetrically placed windows; the end windows are triple sashes, all featuring heavy lintels and sills.
On the ground floor, there are two shops faced with green and white ceramic tiles. The larger shop on the right is double fronted and currently operates as a fruiterer's. It has double entrance doors that are part glazed, with lozenged grills and an opening fanlight above. There are two broad sash windows with large panes of plate glass and ventilation grills above, each equipped with a pair of wood and brass handles. The shop front is decorated with green and white ceramic tiles arranged in stripes, and marble slabs project from the display area beneath the sashes. Below the windows, there is a recessed panel inscribed with "Hamer and Sons Family Butcher."
To the left, there is a narrow shop that was unoccupied at the time of inspection. It has a panelled and glazed door with an opening fanlight above, and to its right is a sash window with a ventilation grill above. The fascia board above the shops features consoles that support gabled fascia ends.
The interior of the fruiterer's shop retains its original character, showcasing chequerboard green and white tiles up to a green glazed ceramic dado rail, with white tiles above. There are white marble window slabs and hangers for meat, and a door leading to the rear room that serves as the front door to the former confectioner's.
