Description
The Old House at Lower Cantal, which includes an attached farm range, is a 1½-storey building featuring three windows. The house is constructed of rubble stone walls, with the rear roughcast and the front mostly rebuilt in brick. It has a slate roof that has been partly replaced by iron sheets, along with a brick stack set back from the left end and a fallen brick stack on the right. To the right of center, there is a replaced, boarded-up door, with an enlarged window to its right (which lacks glazing), a narrow window to its left, and a further two-light casement window to the left. Above these, there are three half dormers with two-light windows, except for the right-hand dormer, which is missing glazing and has part of the jamb and adjacent wall fallen. The rear of the house features an added lean-to with 20th-century windows, and the wall has been taken down at the right end.
On the downhill side of the house, there is a timber-framed farm range clad in weatherboarding, with the lower gable end rebuilt in blockwork. The rear of the farm range consists of blockwork below the weatherboarding. Although not inspected, a survey by RCAHM Wales recorded an arched-brace central cruck truss within the structure.
