Description
Lower Cathedine is a farmhouse with an attached farm range, forming a long L-shaped structure. The main part of the farmhouse dates from the 18th century and is built against the road, while the older section, a 17th-century house, extends downhill. The house features a mix of roughcast and painted stone with a Welsh slate roof and end stacks. The farm range is made of limewashed stone rubble, with a combination of Welsh slate, stone tile, and corrugated roofs.
The main house has three storeys and a three-window arrangement of segmental arched 3/3 pane unhorned sashes with narrow sills on the sides and 2/2 sashes in the centre. Above, there are two full dormers with similar square-headed windows. The ground floor has cambered sashes on either side of a central doorway, which is sheltered by a gabled porch. There are no windows on the rear elevation facing the road. The main frontage features a curved terraced forecourt made of stone.
The earlier unit is a single storey with an attic, which includes two roof dormers and a ground floor doorway with two replaced sashes. The attached farm range has five segmental arched doorways with voussoirs and tooled imposts, along with planked stable doors that have wooden latches and sloping dormers above. The end of the range features two segmental arched cart bays with a loft above.
Inside, the older unit is reported to retain an open fireplace and stone stairs beside it. The attached farm range includes collar trusses and a blocked door leading to the house, as well as interior partitions.
