Description
Yewtree Cottage is a Grade II listed estate cottage built around 1860, although there was a structure on this site as early as 1840. The cottage features a largely brick exterior, with timber panels on the main elevation. The brickwork is painted to resemble timber framing on the return elevations, while the rear remains unpainted. It has a slate roof with overhanging eaves and side wall stacks that have chamfered brick shafts and stepped corbels.
The timber framing on the front elevation is designed with a series of square panels, enhanced by painted cusped quatrefoil and herringbone decorations. The cottage is two stories high and has a two-unit plan, with an advanced gable on the left side and a wide dormer gable over the right unit. The entrance features a plank door with an overlight, positioned at the angle of the two bays. The ground floor has three-light small-paned iron mullioned and transomed windows, while the upper floor has similar two-light windows, all set within slightly projecting moulded architraves.
Yewtree Cottage is a very well-detailed and well-preserved example of a mid-19th century estate cottage, notable for its unusual construction type associated with the Powis Estate.
