Description
Rose House is a Grade II listed building, reputed to date back to 1617, based on a now-removed internal timber. This aligns with the tradition of timber framing typical of the 17th century.
The exterior features a box frame constructed in square panels, with a queen post truss at the gable. The panels are rendered, possibly over wattle and daub, and there is a stone plinth. The roof is made of corrugated iron over thatch, with some thatch still remaining. A brick axial stack is present. The building is a single storey with an attic, designed in a small two-unit plan with a central entrance. The entrance has a plank doorway with a lean-to porch hood, flanked by horizontally sliding sash windows that contain small panes. A single dormer in the roof has wide verges at the gable and features a two-light casement window. There is also a small stone outshut at the rear.
Overall, Rose House is a remarkable survival of a very small vernacular cottage.
