Description
No. 2 Limekiln Cottages, located in Belan, Welshpool, is part of a group of four cottages that were associated with the Belan lime-kilns, which were present by 1840. However, these original cottages were replaced by the current houses built by the Powis Estate sometime after 1859.
The exterior features brick side walls and a rear, with the sides painted to resemble timber framing. The front wall also imitates timber framing, appearing to be painted onto boards that are placed over a frame, creating a series of quatrefoil panels. The cottages have a slate roof with a brick axial stack. Each cottage is symmetrically designed, featuring an outer doorway with a battened plank door and a ground floor window that has two lights with iron mullions and a transom, containing small panes. Above, there is a small gabled dormer with a two-light small paned iron casement window. No. 1 has a single-storey outbuilding attached to the left.
These cottages are a notable example of the picturesque vernacular style from the later 19th century and represent excellent estate housing, contributing to the architectural character of the structures at Belan Locks.
