Description

The Southern Lime-Kiln Bank is a Grade II listed structure that is part of a larger group of lime-kilns, which includes the northern kiln bank. This group was developed in phases from the late 18th century to the mid 19th century. The southern bank consists of four kilns built in two phases: the two southern kilns (kilns 1 and 2) were likely constructed around 1815, while the northern pair (kilns 3 and 4) were added later, probably between 1840 and 1850.

The kilns are integrated into a rubble retaining wall along the canal embankment. Kilns 1 and 2 are positioned further forward and are built on a higher level, which was originally a cart-loading platform, compared to kilns 3 and 4. The earlier pair of kilns features semi-circular arches with brick facing on the outside and brick-lined tunnels leading to the drawing-hole. In kiln No 2, the drawing-hole is located to the right of the tunnel, and the cone of the kiln is still intact. There is also a passage to the left of the main tunnel that connected to the now-collapsed cone of kiln No 1.

Kilns 3 and 4 have high and wide segmental brick arched openings, with kiln No 4 being blocked. These openings are set into the raked-back retaining wall. Kiln 3 retains a wide brick-lined arched tunnel, large enough for cart loading, which slopes down to the drawing hole and the surviving cone of the kiln.

This site is recognized as part of an important complex of lime-kilns, which is the largest single group of kilns on the Montgomeryshire Canal. Together, they demonstrate the typological development of lime-kilns from the late 18th century to the mid 19th century.
