Description
Talyrnau Farmhouse is a 17th-century house that may have been built in two distinct phases. While there has been some repair work over the years, there has been little substantial alteration to the structure.
The exterior features timber framing with mainly brick infill, although some panels are rendered, possibly covering wattle and daub. The roof is slate. The building is box framed in irregular square panels, with intermediate struts in the upper tier and tension braces in the gable end. It is one and a half storeys tall and has a long plan that consists of three or four units. The baffle entrance is located against the axial chimney towards the center of the south-facing elevation. This entrance corresponds with a break in the framing, indicated by a discontinuity in the line of the middle rail, which may mark the original limit of the building before it was extended to the west. The entrance features a plank doorway, with an inserted casement window to its right and two more inserted casement windows to its left. There are three catslide dormers in the roof that retain earlier fenestration, featuring small-paned iron casement windows. The north-facing elevation has an early timber-framed outshut to the east, while 20th-century brick additions obscure the original construction to the west. A lower extension against the west gable end appears to be an early addition and is box framed in regular square panels, with a queen post truss exposed in the gable.
Overall, Talyrnau Farmhouse is a well-preserved example of a 17th-century vernacular farmhouse that retains much of its early structure and form.
