Description

The stable block, including the courtyard entrance, dates from 1820 and was built as part of the remodelling of Llanerchydol Hall, possibly by the landscape architects, the Reptons, for David Pugh. The stable block forms three sides of a courtyard. The outer ranges to the northeast and southwest contain loose boxes, while the northwest range houses carriage houses. The building is two storeys high, with five-window ranges to the northeast and southwest, and two wide carriage doors in the northwest range. To the right of the carriage doors is a chamfered arched doorway with three windows above. A crenellated clock tower sits at the southeast angle, facing onto the garden. It features a tall, narrow, two-light mullioned and transomed window with a drop-ended hood-mould below a clock on its southeast face; a lower block to the northeast has similar two-light windows on each floor. Attached to the southeast of the clock tower is the gateway to the courtyard, featuring a four-centred chamfered arch set within a wall with a stepped embattled parapet, flanked by octagonal pilasters. The arch is dated 1820 with the initials D.P. The gateway and clock tower form an important visual feature in the picturesque design of Llanerchydol Hall, and the stable block as a whole is a well-preserved example of its type and a significant element within the wider estate.
