Description
The Strawberry Pickers' Barracks at Bellis' Farm is a U-shaped range of barracks buildings constructed of wood with a sheet iron roof. A continuous raised ventilation vent runs along the ridge of the roof. The two long ranges contain thirty-five large single cells for accommodation, each accessed by an individual door featuring a moulded wooden architrave and topped with a timber swan-neck pediment. To the left of each doorway is an oval blue and white enamel number plate. A wooden string course runs the full length of these ranges, and between each doorway is an eight-paned fixed window, also surmounted by a swan-neck pediment. The southerly gable ends of both long ranges are adorned with decorative cast iron finials.
The short range to the north has a central raised open section for machinery storage, which is pedimented and originally housed a bellcote. On either side of this section are more single cell accommodations. Inside each large cell, there is an open wall-mounted cupboard with ten individual pigeon holes and coat hooks beneath. A list of rules and regulations is pasted on the courtyard end of each cupboard. The end blocks of the longer ranges contain toilets.
