Description
The Squash Court at Chirk Castle is a two-storey brick building featuring framing pilasters and applied half-timbering, with whitewashed brick on the upper storey. It has a gabled slate roof that includes a large rooflight along the ridge and swept eaves with plain chamfered bargeboards. The main entrance is on the east side, showcasing a central half-glazed door flanked by sidelights, with two small pane casements on either side and a wide four-light window above. A lattice glazed diamond window is set in the gable within the timber framing. The side elevations consist of four bays marked by brick pilasters, while the rear elevation features a large square louvred ventilation panel within the timber framing.
Inside, the main door opens into an entrance lobby with a flagstone floor, leading directly into the main squash court. A dog-leg staircase to the left provides access to a viewing platform with a timber balustrade, and a door to the right leads to a small changing room. The squash court retains its timber flooring and markings, with a modern ceiling that still showcases the original iron roof trusses, tongue and groove lining, and the rooflight above.
