Description

The Stable Ranges are a 17th-century building constructed from coursed rubble stonework and topped with a slate roof. The structure features a tall lower floor that houses the stables and a low upper floor used for storage and accommodation for stable boys. It is arranged in an L-shape, with the west arm connecting to the west side of the castle just south of the central tower. The building is symmetrical, consisting of three bays, and includes a central carriageway with a three-centred arch that provides access to the internal courtyard. The corners are accentuated with expressed quoins.

At the first floor level, there are three cross windows with segmental arched heads, and the building is topped with a crenellated parapet. The southern end of this block features a second major elevation that overlooks the escarpment of the Ceiriog valley, comprising thirteen bays. The central three bays are slightly set out and also have a crenellated parapet. On the ground floor, there are three round arched quoined doorways. Each of the five-bay ranges on either side includes two quoined doors, each topped with a large keyed oculus. A high set sill band runs above, connecting the five cross windows, all of which have segmental heads and iron paned glazing.

Inside, the four bays of stabling on each side are covered by a groined plaster vault. The stabling consists of various stables and pens, featuring partly railed fronts made of cast iron set on low walls, with ends that display Romanesque type detail. The flooring is made of yellow brick arranged in a herringbone pattern.
