Description
Johnston's Cottage and the farm buildings of Home Farm are located at the northwest corner of a farmyard that is arranged in an open square, forming a U-shape that is partly open to the north. The southern range extends east beyond the enclosing eastern range, and a three-bay cartshed projects from the northern end of the eastern range to the east, creating a second open square that faces east. The eastern range features a covered cartway at the center of its eastern side.
Johnston's Cottage is constructed of stone with a slate roof and stands two stories tall with attics. It has three bays and a lean-to at the eastern gable end. The cottage has a central boarded door and a five-light cross-pattern overlight above it. Each main floor has three-light transomed timber windows with segmental heads. There are three dormer windows in the attic and gable stacks. Additionally, there is a secondary entrance located on the western gable end.
The farm buildings are similar in design, featuring rubble stone walls at the ground level with various openings. The western face of the eastern range is made of stone, which flanks the open side to the north. The upper level consists of timber framing with square panels filled with painted brick. A large cartway leads from the yard into the southern range, which includes a barn on the eastern side and a cow-house on the western side. The eastern range also has additional cow-housing to the south of the cartway and stabling to the north. The southern range extends east of the eastern range and includes some accommodation, featuring one brick stack and a lean-to porch. The northern front of this range is made of rubble stone with ashlar dressings and has a radiused voussoired three-centred arch. The central cartway of the eastern range has straight angle braces supporting the continuous wall plates. Above the cartway, there is an open timberwork lantern topped with a gilded windvane on a pyramidal roof. The cartshed, built in 1905, is made of stone and has three bays open to the south. The yard is partly cobbled.
