Description
Holt Bridge is a Grade I listed structure built from local red sandstone. It features eight segmental arches that cross the river, with prominent pointed cutwaters and refuges on both sides. There is a ninth arch located in the causeway on the Welsh side. The bridge has a narrow, single carriageway with a gently ramped roadway that spans approximately 84 meters. A stringcourse runs along the base of the parapet, and the two-order arches have chamfered voussoirs of varying heights, indicating possible alterations over time. The third arch from the Welsh bank may have marked the location of a gateway or guardhouse with a drawbridge, as suggested by the high arch ring and changes in masonry. The parapet features pitched stone coping. The roadway has been modernly resurfaced. On the downstream side to the east, the parapet is corbelled back at a skewed angle, ending in a simple pier, while on the upstream side, it turns north along the road and tapers down to a low pier. Modern railings are present, although sockets for older railings can still be seen. To the west, the parapet continues on both sides along a causeway across low-lying ground, turning south and tapering, with a cut on the downstream side, ending at a gated entry to a field on the upstream side.
