Description
Squires Cottage is a 17th-century single-storey building with a three-unit plan, featuring whitewash over rubble and a thatched roof, along with a stack on the right-hand gable. The lower gable displays exposed timber framing, including a queen post and collar truss. The doorway is positioned towards the right, and there are inserted casement windows with two and three lights. A parallel rear range was added around 1980.
Inside, the doorway leads directly into a hall that is open to collar level, revealing rough purlins and rafters. There is a roughly chamfered curved bressumer above the gable fireplace, and a square panelled timber-framed partition with a cambered tie-beam and queen-post truss. Heavy plank doors on either side provide access to a central unheated service room at the front and a rear lobby that houses the staircase. Additionally, there is a further square panelled framed partition wall separating these small rooms from the former parlour, which features a roughly chamfered axial beam. The ceiling over the parlour and central rooms has wide boarded floors leading to the upper storey.
