Description
Gwaelod is a two-storey, two-window cottage built in the 18th century. It features a timber-framed structure under a slate roof with brick end stacks, and has a lower unit attached to the left side. The timber-framing includes two tiers of small-scantling close-studding with brick nogging painted white. The entrance is slightly left of centre and has a doorcase with a canopy supported by scrolled brackets, which contains a half-glazed panelled door. On either side of the entrance are sixteen-pane horned sash windows in moulded frames, aligned on each floor. The west gable end is weather-boarded and has a wooden small-pane top-hung window in a timber surround to the right of centre; these features were renewed around 2000.
At the rear, the timber-framing matches that of the front, with a planked door to the left of centre within an open lean-to porch. Wooden small-pane windows flank the doorway and are present on the first floor, all being two-light casements except for the bottom right window, which is top-hung. The adjoining lower unit on the east side was rebuilt in the late 20th century, constructed of white-painted brick on the ground floor and weather-boarded above. It has a single small-pane light on each storey, with a former doorway on the far left that is partly infilled with glazing. The rear elevation is of brick, featuring a late 20th-century wooden small-pane window on each storey, and an additional window on the east gable beneath a shallow brick lean-to.
Inside, the front entrance leads into the living room on the left, which has a ceiling with a shallow-chamfered spine beam and plain joists. There is a small fireplace on the left with a timber lintel, and a plain straight timber stair leading to the rear. Opposite the fireplace is a close-studded partition, now open, that leads to two inner rooms. The fireplace against the west end wall has been infilled, with an aga/rayburn positioned in front. To the east, accessible from the living room, is a service room with a lower floor level. This room is unheated and features two deep stop-chamfered spine beams. On the first floor, most of the timber-work is concealed, but the east room retains two pairs of old purlins.
