Description

This is a two-storey farm building dating back to the 17th century, located at Pen y Ddol. The building has undergone various changes and presentations to its front and rear. The roof is slate, with a truncated brick ridge stack to the right of the centre. The front and rear walls are mainly clad in corrugated iron sheeting, but sections of original box-panelling, set on a stone plinth, are visible on the gable ends. The eastern (front) elevation appears to resemble a house with 19th and 20th-century details, while the western (rear) elevation presents as a more typical farm building.

The front has a lobby entrance to the right of centre. The left side of the doorway is clad in corrugated iron. The lower storey on the right has been rebuilt in red brick, likely around 1900. The upper storey to the right retains original box-panelling with brick nogging, partially covered in roughcast. One window is retained in the lower storey: a 3-light, small-pane iron casement in the brick section. Four 3-light wooden casements, probably from the 20th century, are located on the upper storey, with a single light positioned between the first and second windows from the left. The rear elevation features doorways on the left and centre, both with boarded doors, with the right-hand doorway open. The north gable end is constructed of stone and includes box-panelling with diagonal struts to the apex; the panels are open. The south gable end is adjoined by a later farm range.

Inside, three cruck-trusses remain in the house, with the outer trusses incorporating collars. The 17th-century lobby entrance leads to a hall on the left, with service rooms beyond, and a parlour on the right. Originally half-timbered back-to-back fireplaces are located in the parlour; the framing is partially visible, and the fireplace has been infilled with stone and a smaller fireplace. A grain silo has been installed in the parlour, necessitating the removal of the upper floor. The hall fireplace has been partly filled in with brickwork and a Victorian stove. The hall ceiling retains a spine beam with a narrow chamfer and plain joists, along with stop-chamfered spine beams with run-out stops. A 20th-century partition has been inserted axially, creating a passage along the west side of the house, which now contains a straight timber stair. The original post-and-panel partition between the hall and service rooms was replaced with a partition of small timber posts; two doorways lead into the former service rooms, partially cutting through the cruck blades. The service rooms are no longer divided, and part of the ceiling is missing, revealing wattle-and-daub panelling beneath the cruck truss at the first-floor level. Access to the upper floor is currently unavailable, although an ornate central hall truss was previously recorded there.
