Description
The barn at Birchen House is a 19th-century structure featuring a long range clad in corrugated iron sheeting and weather-boarding, topped with a corrugated iron roof. The front of the barn has a single raised doorway at the center, which contains a panelled door, and two cart-bay openings towards the right end. The south gable end is made of stone. Adjoining to the left is a cow-house that has three planked doors; its north gable end is constructed of stone with a timber-framed gable. The rear, which is partially visible, is also clad in corrugated iron sheeting and includes door and loft hatch openings.
Inside, the barn consists of five bays and features four well-preserved cruck-trusses with tie-beams and collars, along with two rows of purlins. There is a central threshing floor that is boarded on the south side, and the barn does not have a loft. The right-hand bays are used for storage, while the left-hand bays contain sheep pens.
To the north, there is a three-bay byre with tie-beam trusses that include raked struts. Some hayracks are still in place, along with partitions made of corrugated iron sheeting.
