Description

The barn at Rhyd y Carw is a single-storey structure built on a high stone plinth. The north wall and east gable end are covered with weatherboarding, while the south wall and west gable end are clad in corrugated iron, which hides the original box panelling. The roof is also covered with corrugated iron sheeting. The external openings reflect the barn's agricultural use; on the north side, there is a central doorway leading to the threshing floor, which features a single boarded door accessed by stone steps. On the south side, there is a boarded hatch that may have ventilated the threshing floor, along with a wide cart-bay opening to the left that has a door made of corrugated iron sheeting. Additionally, there is a narrow door and a loft hatch on the east gable end.

Inside, the barn has three well-preserved cruck trusses that frame the hall. The central truss is arched-braced and has nail-head decoration on the underside, while the outer trusses feature collars. At the east end, a tie-beam has slots for a former post-and-panel partition that included a single doorway, behind which was the parlour. The smaller service rooms were located at the west end, behind a passage partition that is now missing. Other internal features related to the barn's agricultural use include partly surviving boarded partitions, the threshing bay with a raised oak floor, and mangers in the west bay.
