Description
The barn at Ty'n y Coed is a single-storey structure built from rubble stone and topped with a slate roof. It is aligned north-south and features a central threshing bay that is offset to the south. There is a lean-to extension with a cat-slide roof on the northern part of the eastern side, and a section of wall is attached to the southeast corner.
On the eastern elevation, the lean-to is attached to the north and includes a tall threshing door and a narrow ventilation slit to the south. The southern gable has a kneeler with a carved face built into it, and there is a door at the southern end of the lean-to. The southern gable also features a wide window positioned high up. The western elevation has a threshing door that has been widened, with its jambs reformed in concrete. There is a ventilation slit to the south, with one jamb reformed in brick, and a similarly sized opening to the north, which is in a rebuilt section, followed by a narrow slit. The northern gable has a wide opening, and both the northwest and northeast corners have been rebuilt.
Inside, the barn has a four-bay cruck-framed structure with three raised cruck trusses. Each truss features collars and short ties that connect back into the walls, although some ties are missing. The central cruck includes an arched brace collar that is pegged to the blades, while the southern cruck has a later-added tie-beam. The roof is constructed with fully torched slates on close rafters and twin purlins. Each bay has openings in the side walls, and there are wide gable openings at both ends.
