Description
Penrhyd Gatehouse is a small gate lodge designed in 1927 by architect Herbert Luck North, known for his Arts and Crafts style. The building is constructed of roughcast rubble and features long, sweeping slate roofs with brick dressings. The wide, gabled entrance section has large pointed arches above the carriageway, supported by battered lower walls of snecked rubble. The arches are detailed with three courses of brown headers as voussoirs and a tiled label. On both the east and west faces, there are 3-light leaded windows with plain wooden mullions.
To the right, there is a semicircular projecting stair turret at the front, topped with a conical roof and deep eaves, featuring a lead spike-finial. The turret has three vertical leaded lights in its upper section. This turret adjoins a single-storey cross-wing to the right, which is built into a verge and has 2 and 3-light windows similar to those on the main structure. The right gable end includes a modern semi-octagonal conservatory. On the left side of the rear (east) face, there are two single lights, with stepped access leading up the verge to a modern door and a modern window beyond.
Inside the main arched gateway, there are round-arched entrances to the north and south returns, fitted with modern panelled and part-leaded doors, and three small leaded lights on the north return. The front (west) is also adorned with contemporary white sloping, latticed iron gates. The interior was not inspected at the time of the survey in May 1996.
