Description

Folly Farm is a 17th-century cottage that is timber-framed and rendered, featuring a steeply pitched pantiled roof and an axial brick stack. The building is one and a half storeys tall with a three-unit plan and a lobby entry. The south-facing front includes a four-panel entrance door flanked by a window on each side, along with a single dormer window. There is also a single dormer at the rear of the property. The windows date from the 19th and 20th centuries. A single-storey lean-to on the west gable and a porch at the front are later additions. Inside, the rooms on either side of the large brick stack have exposed joists and flat chamfered bridging beams with stepped bar stops. The original kitchen has been divided into a separate kitchen and parlour, the latter featuring a corner fireplace against the main stack. The open fireplace in the room to the east of the stack has been blocked, and a modern fire with a brick surround has been added. A narrow single flight stair is located at the rear of the east unit. In the attic space, a partition has been added to create a narrow passage that provides separate access to two bedrooms, which are divided by the stack. This cottage is a good example of a small 17th-century vernacular building that retains most of its original timber frame.
