Description
The barn at Cefn Isa is a Grade II listed structure built from rubble with a slate roof and rubble gable parapets featuring mortar capping. The west elevation has opposed openings that are now blocked; it includes an offset door in a blocked opening, a window to the right beneath the eaves, and a series of ventilation slits. To the right, there is a substantial rubble buttress. The east elevation also has an offset door in a blocked opening and a series of ventilation slits. There are visible breaks in the masonry at the gable ends and in the walls where they have been raised. The gable end facing the road has a rubble plinth.
Inside, the barn consists of five bays, with an earlier 20th-century half-height partition at the north end. Starting from the south end, bay 1 features a simple tie-beam truss with angle struts, which is typical for the area. Bay 2 has a paired truss, with the southernmost truss similar to bay 1, possibly added to strengthen the roof at this point. The northernmost truss is a raised cruck with a replaced eastern blade, featuring a tie-beam and collar that has been altered with the addition of a crudely made collar and king post. Bay 3 contains an upper cruck with a collar and tie-beam, while bay 4 has another simple tie-beam truss similar to bay 1. The purlins include some altered and replaced members, although some are scarfed.
