Description

The Co-op Supermarket is a large, three-storey building that was originally designed as two commercial premises, built as an associated pair. It features brick construction with a continuous slate roof and staged stone chimneys on the right side of each section, topped with moulded capping. The facades are made of limestone ashlar, showcasing symmetrical upper floors and a deep modillion cornice that runs the length of the elevation.

On the left-hand section (number 26), there are three large windows on both the first and second floors, arranged similarly. These windows nearly span the entire width and are separated by narrow dividing piers. The central window has four lights, while the flanking windows have five lights, all with arched heads and divided into three panes by narrow horizontal glazing bars.

The right-hand section features a square-headed window in the centre of the first floor, which is divided into two arched lights, with single arched windows on either side. The second floor has a triple-arched window in the centre, flanked by double-arched lights. Throughout, there are roll-moulded arches and engaged shafts with simple capitals, and the glazing is plain casement.

The ground floor is constructed of rusticated stone and includes a wide depressed arch at the centre of each section. There are tall arched doorways to the right of each section, along with a wider arched entry on the far left.

The interior was not inspected at the time of the survey.
