Description

The Swan Hotel is a building that has been completely rendered and painted, topped with natural slate roofs. It consists of two sections: a single depth main entrance range and a double depth rear range that is at right angles and predates the main section.

The main facade is three storeys high and features five bays with a rounded corner. It is flanked by pedimented frontispieces on each side, which are set slightly forward from the main facade. These pedimented sections have round arched windows with architraves and keyblocks, arranged in groups of two and three at the advanced bays. The ground floor has a continuous band that arches over the windows, which were originally part of an open loggia. The windows here are mid-20th century infill, as is the very basic porch on bay 2.

On the first floor, there are single slight windows in bays 1, 3, and 5, a three-light window in bay 2, and a tripartite sash in bay 4. All of these are 1 over 1 pane sashes. The second floor features a cillband with single windows, except for paired windows in bays 2 and 4. The building has deep eaves with altered pediments, hipped roofs, and no chimneys. The left return of the building is one bay wide with paired windows on the upper floors.

There is a three-window central entrance elevation to the attached building on Cross Street, which has a rusticated doorway that is now blocked. This doorway is flanked by three-light plate glass sashes, which are also a 20th century alteration. The first floor has 8 over 8 pane sashes with narrow glazing bars, while the upper floor features 3 over 6 pane windows. The building has deep eaves, a hipped roof, and no stacks.

A tall narrow stair window is present on the north elevation, and both rear elevations are plain and have been altered. The interior of the building was not inspected during the resurvey.
