Description

23 Cross Street is part of a group of buildings that includes Nos. 22 and 23A, constructed from yellow brick with some red brick detailing and terracotta features. The building has a natural slate roof with yellow brick chimneys. It has a double depth plan, featuring shops on the ground floor and residential spaces above. The structure is two storeys tall with attics and consists of seven bays arranged in a pattern of 2 + 2 + 3.

The ground floor has two shopfronts with entrances on the left, and one shop (No. 22) with a central entrance, while the house entries for Nos. 22 and 23 are located to the right of these shops. The shopfronts retain much of their original design, featuring large vertical panes separated by slim timber mullions and small lights above. Each shopfront is framed by pilasters, and there are six doors in total, each adorned with paired consoles and intricate terracotta heads, complete with swags and pedimented caps. Each shop also has a fascia, while the house doors are six-panel designs topped with keyed elliptical heads.

On the first floor, additional pilasters rise to a coved cornice with paired console caps. There are seven windows in total: two for No. 23A, two for No. 23, one above the door for No. 23, one for No. 22, and one above the door for No. 22. All windows are 2 over 2 pane sashes, featuring meeting rails that curve on the underside, with the tops of the upper sashes divided into small panes, except for those of No. 23A, which have been replaced with plate glass. Above No. 22, there is a canted oriel window with a coved base and a pedimented head, with sashes matching the others. The building has a coved cornice with deeply projecting eaves and a plain roof that features four gabled dormers. These dormers have 1 over 2-pane sashes, with the upper panes divided into small panes, and are topped with pedimented gables and finials, with large stacks on either gable.

The rear elevation has not been inspected, and the interior was not examined during the resurvey.
