Description
This building, located at 23A Cross Street, is part of a terrace of three buildings (Nos. 22, 23 and 23A) and dates from the 18th century. It is constructed of yellow brick with red brick dressings and terracotta details, topped by a natural slate roof with yellow brick stacks. The building has a double-depth plan, with shops on the ground floor and residential accommodation above. It is two storeys and has attics, arranged over seven bays, divided as two bays for No. 23A, two for No. 23, and three for No. 22.
There are three original shopfronts: two have entries to the left, one has a central entry (at No. 22), and house entries are to the right of Nos. 22 and 23. Each shopfront features large vertical panes with slim timber mullions and small lights above. Six pilasters frame the shops and the entrances, each with paired consoles and elaborate terracotta heads depicting swags, topped with pedimented caps. Each shop has a separate fascia, and the house doors are six-panel doors with keyed elliptical heads.
The first floor has pilasters rising to a coved cornice with paired console caps. There are seven windows: two to the front of No. 23A, two to the front of No. 23, one above the door of No. 22, one above the door of No. 23, and one to the front of No. 22. These are generally 2 over 2 sash windows with meeting rails, curved on the underside, and the tops of the upper sashes divided into small panes. The windows of No. 23A have been replaced with plate glass. Above No. 22 is a canted oriel window with a coved base and a pedimented head, with sashes matching those below. The building has a coved cornice with deeply projecting eaves.
The roof is plain, with four gabled dormers; each has a 1 over 2-pane sash window with the upper pane divided into small panes, a pedimented gable, and a finial. There are large brick stacks to each gable. The rear elevation has not been inspected. The interior was not inspected during a recent survey.
