Description

The Gateway and Lodge to Ruthin Castle Hotel is a Grade II listed structure designed in the Picturesque Gothic style with a castellated appearance. The gateway features snecked limestone with red sandstone dressings, including copings on the castellated parapets. It has a wide pointed-arched entrance adorned with hollow mouldings and a hoodmould with end stops. The sides of the gateway are splayed towards a narrower inner arch, with a narrow lancet on the left splay and a similar lancet on the front wall to the left of the gateway, which may illuminate a staircase. The rear side of the gateway showcases a higher Tudor arch and a diagonal buttress on the left. To the right of the front, a rubble wall steps down at right angles over a pointed-arched gateway made of stone voussoirs, providing access to The Cunning Green footpath that follows the northern boundary wall of Ruthin Castle Hotel.

To the left of the gateway is the lodge, which consists of a narrow three-stage tower and crow-stepped link walls that connect to the northeast and northwest angles, stepping down to meet the gateway. The lodge is constructed from roughly coursed limestone with red sandstone dressings, including quoins, a string course on the castellated parapets, copings, and window surrounds. A chimney stack is located between the parapets but is not fully visible. The east side, facing Corwen Road, features two windows on the ground and first floors, with a lancet in the upper stage of the tower. The link wall steps down to the right, and at the southeast angle, there is a first-floor oriel window that is polygonal with a pyramidal roof. Below the oriel window is a boundary wall made of rubble stone with semi-circular coping, also fronting Corwen Road.

On the south side, which faces into the grounds of Ruthin Castle Hotel, there is a Tudor-arched doorway containing a plain wooden door and a lancet in the upper stage of the tower. The west side has a Tudor-arched doorway on the far left with a half-glazed panelled door, protected by a scrolled iron grille in front of the glazing. To the right of this door are two lancets, both boarded over, with the one on the right also featuring an iron grille. There is an additional boarded-over lancet offset to the left of the first floor, and the upper stage of the tower has another lancet.
