Description
16 Castle Street, part of a group with 18 Castle Street, is a two-story house with attics, dating from the 18th century. The building is characterized by its four continuous gables facing the front, which project from an earlier cross-range and are symmetrically arranged, with wider outer gables flanking paired, narrower, and shorter central gables. The exterior is rendered and lined, set on a plinth, and has slate roofs. Four brick ridge stacks are visible, positioned at the angles of the gabled bays and the cross-range; one stack has been renewed. Each gable is decorated with cusped barge boards and a finial, while raised quoins define the outer angles. The majority of the windows are 16-pane sashes, set within raised surrounds. Each gable also features an attic window, which is a small-pane horizontal sliding sash. The entrances are distinguished by pedimented doorcases with fluted pilasters, moulded capitals, and contain a six-panel door beneath a four-pane overlight with gothic glazing.
Number 16 is located to the right. It has its entrance to the left of centre, with a sash window to the left and two sashes to the right. The first floor features a sash window in each gable. The rear of the property includes a four-pane sash window beneath a six-pane sash, offset to the left, beneath a hipped roof. A narrow rear wing, possibly dating from around 1900, is situated to the right, featuring a doorway on its north side, and a conservatory is attached. The interior of the property has not been inspected.
