Description

Cynval Villas is a two-storey building with an attic, constructed in render over brick and topped with a slate roof. It features coped gables with a truncated end wall and axial stacks, as well as ornate filigree bargeboards on the front gables. Originally designed as a symmetrical pair, it has outer gables and a central range with three windows. The ground floor showcases rusticated quoins and fluted angle pilasters at the first floor level.

The outer gables have canted bay windows on the ground floor, complete with a cornice and blocking course, and sashes that include margin light glazing. The upper windows are set within moulded architraves that have brackets supporting segmentally pedimented heads, along with continuous bracketed sill bands; these are also sashes with margin lights. Small attic windows are found in the gable apexes, recessed within segmentally arched stressed architraves.

There are doorways on either side of the central range, framed by round-arched architraves, and a central two-pane sash window with margin light glazing, set in an architrave with paired pilasters leading to a segmental pediment. The round-arched windows above the doorways and the central first-floor window are also sashes with margin light glazing, framed by architraves that are bracketed to a continuous sill band. Narrow bays on either side of the outer gables are built over passages that provide access to the rear through round-arched doorways. The passage door on the eastern side has been blocked, likely when the building was extended around 1890 with the addition of a small single window range featuring a pedimented gable.

Despite a change of use and the merging of two formerly separate units, the building maintains its original internal layout and several details, including two staircases with plain spindle balusters.
