Description

Grafton Lodge is a two-storey building featuring lined-out render and slate roofs. The roof is hipped over the central range and gabled on the sides, with plain bargeboards and axial and end wall stacks. The building has an asymmetrical plan due to a series of extensions to the original structure. The entrance range is short and flanked by asymmetrical gables, with a further advanced gable to the west. The earliest part of the building is likely the entrance range, which has lower internal ceiling heights.

The entrance is located to the right in a full-height advanced bay, featuring a shallow 4-centred arched doorway, with the arched shape repeated in the door panels. The windows consist of paired 8-pane hornless sashes with a slim central mullion, a design that is consistently used on the first floor and likely dates from a remodelling of the house in the later 19th century.

To the left, there is a canted bay window in a recessed section, showcasing fine glazing bars on the sash window, with paired sashes on the first floor and an oversailing roof above. The small advanced left-hand gable includes a wide floor-length tripartite sash window with fine glazing bars, along with a paired sash window above. The advanced wider right-hand gable features inserted French doors, likely replacing a similar window, with a paired sash window above. This gable is balanced by the outer gable to the left and is roofed at right angles to the gabled frontage, representing a wing added in the later 19th century. A door and window open onto a conservatory, which is a later addition or replacement, and the upper window resembles those in the main body of the house but has horned sashes.
