Description
Cae Dafydd is a two-storey house with the character of a gentry residence. It features a three-window main range and a long rear range that has an advanced near-central gable parallel to the main block. The building is constructed of roughly coursed and squared slate-stone, with finely dressed long blocks on the main range. It has slate roofs with gable end stacks on both the main range and the rear wing, including its advanced gable.
The main range, which dates from the early 19th century and was remodeled around 1830 from an earlier structure, has a central panelled and partly glazed doorway, along with 16-pane sash windows on the first floor and flanking the entrance. The eaves are moulded, and the roof is supported by timber brackets. The west elevation facing the garden features a broad gabled return of the main range, with French doors on the ground floor and indications of an earlier roofline at the apex.
There is a rough straight joint and a different masonry style that suggest the main range and the rear wing were built in different phases. The rear wing, which forms most of this elevation, likely dates from after the main range and represents work done in 1852. This wing has a central advanced gable with a 16-pane sash window on both the ground and first floors, and a 4-pane sash window with a round arched head at the gable apex. To the right is a stair window, a margin-light sash, and the left bay has a 12-pane sash window on the first floor, with a renewed lower window. The rear gable of the wing includes a similar round-headed apex light, an 8-pane sash on the first floor, and a lean-to bay window with paired 8-pane sashes on the ground floor.
The interior retains a mid-19th century layout, featuring a central entrance hall flanked by the principal rooms, with a staircase offset between these and the service rooms, although there is little original detail remaining.
