Description
The Field Cowhouse at Garneddi is a vernacular structure dating from the 18th century, located against the slope of a hill. It is built from boulder rubble and sits on pronounced boulder and rock foundations. The roof is made of cement grouted slate and features crudely-kneelered rubble gable parapets. The front gable has an entrance with a crude projecting lintel supported by stone corbels, leading to a deeply-recessed boarded stable door. There is an open loading door at the rear gable, and the roof includes a discreet skylight on the right pitch.
On the eastern long side, there are two 19th-century rubble lean-tos that have a continuously-roofed structure made of corrugated iron; these have a modern stable door at the front and are open at the rear.
Inside, the cowhouse has a three-bay layout with original crude pegged trusses of collar and tie-beam type, along with surviving original purlins and rafters. The floor is slate-flagged and features a central slate gully, with slate partitions dividing the stalls. There are various pieces of graffiti in the doorway jambs, including one dated 1728 with the initials 'Rg' (?).
