Description
This is a row of four houses, likely built around 1877, sharing a design with Nos. 35-41 Russell Road. The houses are constructed of yellow brick with painted stone detailing and red-brick dressings, although No. 43 has roughcast render. The roofs are slate-covered with chimney stacks running parallel to the ridge and at the ends. The houses are two storeys high with attics, arranged symmetrically with projecting gables and short gabled wings providing entrances to Nos. 43 and 29 Bath Street. The main gables feature two-storey canted bay windows with painted stone cornices and terracotta panels placed below the first-floor windows. Round-arched windows are found in the gable apexes, each with a keystone, a red-brick hood mould, and impost bands. Sill bands run across the facade, serving both the first floor and the attic. A central range presents doorways set in angled positions within gabled wings. Porches, with entablatures extending over rectangular bay windows, front the entrances. These bay windows are divided into tripartite sashes. The entablatures are ornamented with cast-iron brattishing. Single windows are positioned above the doors, while paired windows are above the bays, all with round arches and linked by red-brick hood moulds and impost bands that extend across the fronts. Paired gabled dormer windows are located centrally above, featuring round-arched windows and pierced bargeboards with finials. A deep moulded eaves cornice defines the central range, while the main gables have plain bargeboards. The return elevation to Bath Street includes a wide gable with a canted bay window on the ground floor, and round-arched windows on each floor above.
