Description
Bron y Gaer Mews is a two-storey building made of painted brick, dating from the late 18th century. It is situated under a slate roof and features a narrow brick ridge stack. The front of the building faces east into a courtyard and has openings that were added in the late 20th century.
The entrance is located on the far left and consists of a part-lit wooden door beneath a slated lean-to porch supported by curved brackets. To the right of the entrance are double boarded doors leading to a garage. Between these doorways are two small wooden windows, with a plain-glazed window on the left and a top-hung window on the right. The upper storey displays irregular windows: top-hung lights on the left and center, a two-light window on the right, and a semi-circular oculus on the far right.
The north gable end connects to the garden wall of Nantclwyd House. At the rear, there are two lean-tos on the ground floor. The right lean-to is made of brick and features a three-light plain-glazed wooden casement. The larger lean-to on the left has a half-glazed door on the right-hand return. On the upper storey, there is a wide window above the left lean-to, two tall gabled half-dormers on the right with plain-glazed sashes, a round arch leading to a through-passage, and a small top-hung light above. Inside the through-passage, there is a late 20th-century door leading into the south end of the house.
Bron y Gaer Mews is part of a group that includes Plas yn Dre and Bron y Gaer. Plas yn Dre was formerly marked by a tablet over its entrance stating 'Rebuilt by C Jones 1823' and is positioned at right angles to Bron y Gaer, which is the earlier building. The garden wall of No 20 and its rear garden, along with the Lodge of Ruthin Castle, also form part of this group. The interior of Bron y Gaer Mews has not been seen.
