Description

Llanfair Dyffryn Clwyd Controlled School is a building that consists of a schoolroom block on the east side and a house on the west side, both facing north towards the village green of Llanfair. The walls are made of uncoursed axe-dressed local limestone in a light grey color, which contrasts with the dark fawn color of the freestone dressings around the doorways and windows. The roof is covered in slate with tile ridges and features small gable finials, slightly overhanging eaves, thin bargeboards, and exposed purlin-ends. There are two roof ventilators and two tall lateral chimneys with raking sides on the south side, one of which is located in the valley between the original building and later additions.

The eastern schoolroom block is nearly symmetrical, featuring a tall central gable that includes a Tudor-arched window with a label mould, above which is a slit ventilator. This gable is flanked by wide windows, and there is a two-light casement window to the right. A similar Tudor window is found in the east-facing end gable, although the wide windows have modern frames.

The western block displays twin gables on the front, each with a three-light casement window above and below, and each opening has a relieving arch within the wall masonry. There is also a similar single gable on the rear (south) elevation. On the right side (west elevation), there is a door within a small lean-to porch, which has a small gable dormer window above it.

The school has been significantly enlarged to the south, which includes a tall block at the east end constructed with similar materials and a flat-roofed rear section with brick walls.
