Description

The Agricultural Range at Cae Melwr Farm is a Grade II listed building that features a lofted stable and cowhouse range. At the loft level, there are two doorways with stone steps leading up, and three square windows positioned at the eaves. On the ground floor, to the left, there is a broad doorway flanked by windows with timber frames consisting of three lights, which have ovolo mouldings and unmitred joints (the right window is partially obscured by steps). To the right of the steps is a smaller ground floor doorway, followed by a broad window and another doorway. Adjacent to the stable and cowhouse range is a single-storey lean-to on the right. At the rear, the cowhouse range is positioned at right angles. To the left of the stable and cowhouse range, at a lower level, there is an attached early 19th-century granary and cartshed block. This block has six camber-headed bays for carts, supported by square piers on plinths, with arch voussoirs beneath shallow hoods. The right bay features a door above, while the remaining bays have square windows set at the eaves. The left gable end has stone steps leading up to a loft doorway.

Inside, the southwest end contains a large fireplace with a massive timber lintel, and the floor level is raised. There is a probable recess for former stairs to the left. The ceiling features massive beams with ovolo chamfers, and the two ceiling bays in the southwest have stop-chamfered joists. The beams on either side of the rear doorway have tenons for former plank and muntin partitions, as does a smaller beam to the northeast. The front ground floor windows have deep splays and lintels with stop chamfers. The door leading to the rear animal accommodation also has a stop-chamfered lintel. The roof timbers date from the late 18th century to early 19th century and later.
