Description
Cae'r Berllan is a 20th-century building constructed from local rubble with a slate roof and primarily features earlier 20th-century casement windows. The structure has a roughly L-shaped plan with a crosswing on the right and a smaller gabled wing at the rear. A square stone chimney is located on the right side of the ridge, while a larger square chimney is set forward on the left side. The entrance front faces approximately north, with the entry located in the gabled crosswing to the right.
On the upper floor, there is a small vertically-proportioned window with a broader dripstone above it, and a larger window to the right at a higher level. The ground floor features a square-headed entrance doorway to the left, accompanied by a vertically-proportioned small window. The return to the left has another vertically-proportioned small window with a broader dripstone above. The main block includes a small dormer on the left with a vertically-proportioned window offset to the right at eaves level, and to the right of this, there is a horizontally-proportioned window. On the ground floor, to the left, there is a vertically-proportioned window, with a broader window to the right under a dripstone.
The east gable has copings and a wooden dovecot, which was obscured by ivy at the time of inspection, featuring a dripstone and stone lintel. The first-floor window has a dripstone and stone lintel, along with a square-headed doorway and window to the left, and a small window at the eaves of the return of the small wing. At the rear, the small wing to the right has a broad ground floor window with a timber lintel. To the left of this wing, the main block has three windows at the eaves, with the left window being smaller, and two windows on the ground floor, one of which has a dripstone above it. The west gable features a raking parapet and a small window to the right of the chimney. There are single-storey extensions built with matching materials, which include two gables and a chimney on the left gable.
Inside, the ground floor ceilings are supported by stop-chamfered beams and joists. The dining room ceiling is double framed with a massive longitudinal beam, heavy transverse beams, and joists, with the floor above reportedly made partly of slate slabs. There is a large fireplace with a heavy wooden lintel, and a plank and muntin partition separates the lounge. The staircase, dating from the mid-17th century, features pierced balusters and newels with finials. There are also plank and muntin partitions on the landing, along with an old wardrobe that has unmitred panelling. The upper floor retains original roof timbers, including exposed partitions between the rooms.
