Description
The raised walk at Gwydir Castle is a significant structure dating back to the 18th century. It features a long wall that stands approximately 2 meters high, 1.5 meters wide, and stretches about 0.5 kilometers in length. The wall is built from large slate-stone and boulder blocks, with a roughly battered surface on the north side. The coping and wall-walk are made of large, roughly-dressed slate slabs. It is possible that the wall was originally covered with earth and grass.
At the Gwydir end of the walk, there is a broad flight of eight slate-stone steps leading up to the top of the wall, which are flanked by stepped rubble parapets. At the top, there are early 19th-century rubble piers that once supported a large slate lintel, creating a flat-arched entrance; however, these piers are now in a ruinous state. At the Conwy end, the wall has a modern tractor opening that interrupts its continuity, and it continues for a few more meters before becoming ruinous. Additionally, there is a late 19th-century iron and wire balustrade along the top of the wall, which is partly missing.
