Description

The Barn at Golden Grove is a multi-purpose agricultural building constructed from rubble stone, featuring a steep slate roof that is partly missing. It is situated on a sloping site. Above the downhill gable end, the wooden frame of a former bellcote remains. The building faces west and includes an added lofted cow house at the uphill end, which has three doorways with stone segmental heads, although the outer doorways are blocked. Above these doorways are fixed late 19th-century lights flanking a central window that has an opening light. The roof was partially collapsed at the time of inspection.

The main range of the barn has three doorways; the central doorway features a stone segmental head, while the outer doorways have wooden lintels. Only the right-hand doorway retains a boarded door. Further to the right is a small opening with a brick head. To the left, there are external granary steps with brick treads leading to a boarded door, and to the left of this door is a wood-lintelled window with a smaller pivoting light inserted. The loft has three openings beneath the eaves with wood mullions.

The downhill gable end includes a former dovecote, of which only the Y-shaped wooden brackets have survived. At the rear, starting from the downhill end, there is a blocked former wide doorway under a depressed arch with stone voussoirs. To its right is a barred window followed by a buttress, and above are two loft openings beneath the eaves, with the right-hand opening retaining wooden shutters. Further to the right is an added outshut that has a full-height doorway, a boarded-up window on the right side, and a fixed window in its uphill return wall. To the right of this outshut is a metal-framed loft window and a blocked doorway lower down on the right.

Inside, the main range retains some original trusses with tie and collar beams, although the tie beams are partly cut out. Late 19th-century wooden and early 20th-century brick stalls are still present in the main range.
