Description

Hendre is a large L-shaped farmhouse built in a polite vernacular style. The front wing has two storeys and a basement, while the rear wing is also two storeys with a lean-to structure within the internal angle. The building is constructed from local stone random rubble, featuring large cut stone quoins and cambered brick arches over the openings. The roofs are gabled and covered with Welsh slate, with slate ridges and plain timber barge boards. The gable stacks are made of squared rubble with oversailing stone cappings, and the stack above the northwest gable has coeval square chimney pots.

The symmetrical front elevation faces northeast and consists of three bays of windows, which are 8/8 hornless sashes with narrow glazing bars. At ground floor level, there is a terrace with rubble retaining walls that leads to a central boarded front door from the 20th century, complete with a rectangular fanlight. The northwest gable end features two 20th-century replacement 6/6 timber sash windows and a boarded door leading to the basement. To the right, the lean-to includes a 19th-century sash window of similar proportions. There is also a rear door in the lean-to, accessible from the terrace at ground floor level, which is retained and bounded by a curved rubble wall. The rear wing has an 8/8 hornless sash window in the northwest elevation and replacement windows in the southwest gable end.

Inside, the layout features a central staircase plan with a closed string staircase, stick balusters, and a moulded handrail. The doors are ledged and battened. In the ground floor room north of the hallway, there is an early 19th-century fire surround and a decorated cast iron fireplace.
