Description

Maes Mawr is a large farmhouse constructed of cement-rendered stone, featuring a steeply pitched Welsh slate roof with slightly swept eaves at the front, rendered end stacks, and a large axial stack. The building has a plan consisting of three parallel gabled wings, with the cross wing now forming the main southern frontage. This front section is two storeys high with an attic and includes a three-window range of 2/2 pane cambered head sashes. The ground floor has two 8/8 pane cambered head sashes flanking a central simple flat-roofed portico with a panelled door.

The rear left and right gable ends are three storeys tall, with the top floor featuring 6-pane sashes under a hoodmould. On the first floor, the left side has an 8/12 pane sash window, while the right side has an 8/8 pane sash. The ground floor left has a similar sash window, and there is a 20th-century replacement window on the right. The central staircase bay includes a Venetian staircase window at the first-floor level, with a doorway below.

The building's plan, recorded in Brycheiniog, has remained unchanged and shows an early unit on the front left with stairs ascending beside the fireplace. The front right contains a slightly later hall, and the rear has two rooms from the late 17th century, divided by an 18th-century staircase. More interior features, such as fireplaces, likely survive beneath later remodelling. The front early unit is separated from the later sections by a partition. Notable interior elements include a fine staircase with a very wreathed handrail and turned balusters, some wall panelling, and six-panelled doors throughout.
