Description

The White Hart Inn is a late Georgian inn that has undergone some Victorian remodelling. It is constructed of sandstone rubble with a Welsh slate roof, featuring part dressed stone ridge and end corniced stacks, and has overhanging eaves. The rear of the building is partly roughcast rendered. The inn has a double depth plan with a central entrance, and a former stable wing that is positioned at right angles to the front, forming a cobbled courtyard. The inn itself has two storeys and a deep cellar, while the former stable wing is single storey with a loft.

The main façade features a four-window range on the first floor, consisting of 2/2 pane horned sashes set under cambered voussoirs with stone sills. There are three similar windows on the ground floor, and the left bay indicates a division in the building's construction. The central right doorway has a plain wooden surround, which incorporates a gas lamp above and a rectangular overlight with two panes, leading to a four-panelled double door and two stone steps. To the right, at plinth level, there is an opening with steps and a ramp leading down to the flagged cellar below. The former stable wing includes some segmental arched openings and external steps leading to the former loft.

Inside, the layout has been remodelled to create a single large ground floor room with a bar, replacing the former hallway. Several fireplaces have been retained: the one to the right features a bracketed surround with a cast-iron grate, while the left side has two open fireplaces. Some panelled reveals for doors and windows have been preserved, although plaster has been removed. The roof is reputed to have pegged trusses.
