Description
Yr Aildy was built as a pair of canal cottages with a basement for storage, likely in the 18th century. The building is two storeys and an attic at the front, with an additional storey to the rear. It incorporates storage vaults extending into the bank beyond the house. The construction combines stone rubble with a Welsh slate roof, which is partly mansard, with weatherboarded vertical ends and brick stacks that rise to the ridge due to the roof’s height. The canalside frontage features a single segmental arched window on each floor for each former cottage, with doorways at each end. The rear elevation has a large segmental arched roof dormer, two segmental arched windows to the first floor, one to the ground floor side, and segmental and pointed arched entrances to the cellars below. A lean-to extends from the front left side, wrapping around to the rear. Windows have yellow brick or dressed stone voussoirs (now painted) and small-paned metal casements with shallow stone sills.
The building is four storeys high, including the attic and basement. A full-height spiral staircase is situated within a central fireplace in the southwest corner.
