Description

Craiglas, also known as Graiglas, is a Regency house featuring a main three-bay unit with a side entrance, a stepped-back wing on the left, and a rear cross wing. Adjacent to the entrance porch is a single-storey billiard hall, along with a further wing used for storage that is built against and into the bank. The exterior is made of scored rendered stone with a Welsh slate roof, overhanging eaves adorned with decorative bargeboards and soffits, narrow and long brick stacks, and decorative ridge tiles.

The two-storey main garden frontage has a three-window range, with the center window being blind. The windows are 6/6 pane sashes with very narrow glazing bars set in deep reveals. The ground floor features cross-framed French windows, and there is a similar two-window range on the set-back wing, with some sashes being blind on the side. A pedimented portico is supported by metal columns with fluted piers, and the lobby and entrance door are glazed with stained glass, flanked by grooved pilasters. The gabled former billiard hall has decorative bargeboards, a glazed rooflight, and a large rectangular multipane metal-framed window that retains much of its original glass and decorative leading. The curved entrance wall is made of rock-faced stone gatepiers, with iron spear railings featuring urn stanchions and decorative iron gates.

Inside, the house retains a basket arch to the inner hall and a staircase that runs parallel to the frontage, featuring stick balusters, decorative ends to the treads, and a wreathed handrail. There is a window in the Gothick style that is now internal, along with a large staircase window with radial glazing. The doors and windows have Regency surrounds that are fluted with rosettes, and there are panelled shutters, some of which include Gothick detail. The plasterwork includes friezes from two different periods, and there has been some late Victorian remodelling of the fireplaces.
