Description

West Aberthaw Farmhouse is a two-storey building that dates back to the 17th century, with significant refurbishments in the early and mid-19th century. The exterior is entirely lime rendered and features local lias limestone rubble, which is visible in some areas, topped with Welsh slate roofs. The farmhouse has a single depth three-unit plan and includes a rear service wing.

The main south elevation consists of four bays, with the entrance door located in the third bay. All windows are recessed sashes, with a 6 over 6 pane configuration, except for the second window from the left, which has a 10 over 10 pane arrangement. This window's size suggests it was originally the larger Hall window of the house. The door is a four-panel Victorian style and is accompanied by a timber porch. All windows, except for the larger one, feature horns. The roof has three rendered ridge stacks: one at each gable end and one at the dividing wall between the first and second units.

There are single-storey 19th-century lean-tos on either gable. The rear wing, which extends behind the first unit, is also two storeys and includes a large Victorian kitchen with a small-paned window and a large plank back door. The outhouses contain a washing copper and a bakeoven. The upper floor of the wing features a 19th-century two-light casement window, and there is a limestone gable stack. Additionally, there is a lean-to behind the second unit, a small-paned casement window on the upper floor of the third unit, and a projection for the firestair against the gable stack.

The three-room plan reflects the building's 17th-century origins. Inside, there is a Victorian staircase, while the original 17th-century firestair is blocked at the west end. A stone stair is located in the lateral outshut at the east end. The farmhouse retains a well-preserved Victorian domestic arrangement, including a good kitchen. The upper floor and roof have not been seen.
