Description
Plas yn Blaenau is a three-storey, three-bay farmhouse featuring a central staircase and a double depth plan, with symmetrical facades. The building is constructed from local stone rubble and has pebble-dash render on its elevations, with the west elevation painted. It has a hand-riven slate roof and brick gable chimney stacks. The east-facing front elevation has three 4/8 pane sash windows under the eaves that light the attic storey, and 8/8 pane windows on the first and ground floors. The window openings decrease in size on each successive storey, with the first and ground floor openings having cambered heads. There is a central boarded door with a 19th-century slate-roofed timber canopy featuring a gothic-style gable truss, flanked by later rendered brick walls.
The two-storey rear facade facing west includes three 8/8 pane sash windows on the first floor and a central 3/3 pane window flanked by two 8/8 pane windows on the ground floor. The windows have fine glazing bars and many original crown glass panes. A single-storey extension with a slate gabled roof is attached to the south gable of the main house.
Inside, there is a central timber staircase with turned balusters. The ground floor rooms feature plaster ceilings with central chamfered timber beams that run parallel to the facade, six-panel doors with moulded architraves, and fireplaces. The front rooms on the ground floor have folding panelled window shutters in splayed reveals and chair rails on the walls. The doors on the first floor have contemporary HL hinges. The attic storey has an open rafter roof in three bays with through purlins and principal rafters braced with raking struts, along with match-boarded partitions and ledged and battened doors.
